Chapel, Food and Family

Eating, praying and worshipping together are things that are deeply a part of our humanity and found in family life across all cultures. This belief forms the backbone of community life at Dover College. We are a caring community and pride ourselves on the family atmosphere that pervades every facet of life at the College.

Pastoral care, the well-being of every pupil, is the most important aspect of our community. A child who feels supported, confident, secure and happy is much more likely to thrive than one who does not. Dover College prides itself on the strength, warmth, consistency and thoroughness of its pastoral care.

The Christian faith has been at the heart of Dover College’s spiritual identity since the School was founded. In 21st Century, multi-cultural Britain, we seek to remain true to those Christian foundations, whilst welcoming those from a variety of faith backgrounds (or none). Pupils are encouraged to be open-minded and think for themselves as they encounter the Christian faith in Chapel and on other informal occasions. The spiritual aim of the College is to nurture faith where it exists while arousing curiosity in all pupils towards their spiritual dimension.

The whole school community worships in Chapel every Tuesday and the Senior School also worships together on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon for Evensong.
On Sunday mornings we hold a voluntary service for the residential community.

Every pupil, whether day or boarding, is in a small tutor group and is attached to one of the boarding houses; two for boys and two for the girls. All pupils are cared for by their Housemaster or Housemistress, alongside their Tutor. They play an important role in the provision of pastoral care, as does the Deputy Head Pastoral, the Chaplain and the School Nurse.

Family dining is central to the daily lives of the Junior School pupils, which sees staff and pupils eating together. The Senior School enjoy a family centered carvery supper every Sunday evening which is the perfect way to finish off the week together.
