Careers and Higher Education

Pupils at Dover College are entitled to the best possible objective advice about the choice of courses and career. Careers advice is delivered throughout the College’s curriculum, through the PHSE lessons and through the programme of individual guidance co-ordinated by the Head of Careers.

The Careers Programme is supported with a range of relevant and up-to-date materials in the Careers Library designed to give access through printed and electronic media to all relevant information and advice about Higher and Further Education and Training. Pupils are encouraged to make use of this facility, which is available on an open access basis.

The general aim of careers guidance at lower school level is to highlight the need to be aware of future career plans when making GCSE and A level and subject choices.

Careers advice will generally be based on a presumption that our pupils will move through the standard education format of Sixth Form and British University leading to a degree qualification and graduate level employment. It is recognised that some pupils will not wish to follow this path, e.g. attendance at overseas universities or other routes through further education, and these will receive equal attention.

The Careers’ Department provides information, guidance and advice. Parents have the opportunity to consult with Common Room at specially arranged parents’ meetings, and staff are always available for any further advice or queries. The aim is to ensure that the decisions pupils make are informed and fully considered. Housemasters, in conjunction with parents, the Head of 6th Form and the Deputy Head Academic, retain overall responsibility for ensuring that pupils move forward successfully to the next stage of their lives.

During Years 10 and 11, pupils are given careers advice which deals with:

  • the Careers Library facilities;
  • 6th Form subject choices;
  • whether A Levels or other courses which the College offers;
  • early guidance on degree choices and University selection.

In the Lower Sixth (L6), pupils:

  • are given information and guidance on University choice through Tutorial sessions, the L6th form week, and individually;
  • are encouraged to visit a wide range of Universities;
  • have the UCAS process explained to them.

In the Upper Sixth (U6):

  • formal applications (UCAS and related documents) are completed in September under guidance from Common Room, with additional support from the Head of Careers, Head of 6th Form and Housemasters; 
  • a record is automatically kept of how applications are progressing on the UCAS Website.
