A View from the Close 10th November 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am delighted to share with parents that Emma Miller, who teaches in our Junior School, has been awarded a First Class MA in Education. This is an exceptional achievement and we congratulate her on this milestone in her career.

At the moment our 1XI Football team are playing in Dusseldorf. We have been kept up to date with their achievements, but more will be shared in the VFTC next week!

Please do let people know that our Open Day will be on Saturday 18 November. More details will be shared next week, but please put the date in your diary and encourage people to come along and share in the wonderful atmosphere here at the College.

Wed 1st November

U13 Football vs Wellesley House

The A team went down 4-2 in a thrilling game. After triumphing by two goals at home, the tables were turned in Broadstairs as despite two goals from skipper Harry Meleady (which included a brilliant lobbed free kick from near the half way line) we went down to a counter-attacking home team. The B team also lost despite some good play from Calum Johnson and Sky Liu, in particular.

Thurs 2nd November

1st XI hockey vs Kent College

A very slow start by the girls meant that we went into half time 2 goals down, despite actually having the majority of the possession in a stop start game. We did pull a goal back in the 2nd half through Imogen Davis but another for the home team resulted in a 3-1 defeat. Player of the Match was Ellie Willetts.

U15 hockey vs Kent College

Goals from Tilly Turnbull and Ada Meurer were enough to earn the girls a 2-2 draw against our opponents. Mr Breeze was delighted with the determination of the whole team, well done girls.

Sat 4th November

U13 Hockey vs Battle Abbey

Nine girls played some sensational stuff on the Astro as we welcomed our visitors for the annual exchange, running out 8-1 winners, including two from Captain Lottie Hide.

U13 Football vs Battle Abbey

Twelve boys represented the College in fine fashion on The Close as we played out an excellent match with the boys from Battle. Although we ran out 6-2 victors in the end, the score line probably flattered us slightly, though it was the correct result given the balance of play. Nicholas Proctor and Ilyad Motiei (with his first for the College), were amongst the scorers, and although he didn’t make the scoresheet, we saw a very welcome selfless side to Sam Smith, laying on various goals for his teammates. The pick of the goals was a Harry Meleady effort, involving a great through ball from Sam and sublime flick from Ilyad to make space at the back post.

Glyndebourne Touring Opera - Così Fan Tutte - Mozart

On Thursday 2 November the whole of year 8 plus some senior musicians went to see the Glyndebourne touring production of Mozart’s opera concerning the constancy of loving couples, or ‘The School for Lovers’ as Lorenzo Da Ponte preferred to call it. This artistic creation, firmly embedded in the ethos of the 18th century Age of the Enlightenment, examines the nature of what it is to be human with all its foibles, faults, delights and attractions. Coupled with the sublime music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, this was an extraordinary experience for our pupils to have so close by and for such a small cost. It was a curriculum venture as well, so that the pupils learnt what makes an opera, the structure, set pieces and techniques involved as well as learning about the characters, voices, roles and stagecraft of this particular production. Hopefully, it will have opened their eyes to a new experience of lasting value and will have enriched their understanding of something not normally on their personal radars.

Sunday 12th November - Remembrance Service

There will be a Remembrance Service in the Chapel on Sunday at 1030 followed by refreshments in the Great Hall. A crèche has been set up in the Junior School for those who would like to use it. Please note that this is a very important occasion in the College’s calendar, and we encourage any parents who are, or have served, in the armed forces to attend in uniform.

Speed Limit

Please could I remind everyone who brings a car onto site that the speed limit is 10 MPH. This is for the safety of all and I would kindly ask you to stick to this limit.

As ever,

Gareth Doodes.
